Vegemite was the codename for a connect 5 game with lots of bells and whistles. To test it we released a simplified version and called it Gobang Social. This simplified version was then progressively updated, making Vegemite redundant. However we still had all the Vegemite art assets. This is where Flip comes in, it is a totally new turn based game that can use many of these assets.

All this is part of our learning curve as we find out the secrets of developing and publishing social turn based games on mobile devices. Whist the individual game mechanic of, say connect 5, may appear simple, the realities of bringing a polished version to market are far more complex.

I think one of the main things to remember is that Gobang Social, regardless of being our first, simple game, is still an ongoing test model.

Naturally, we will make mistakes along the way, learn from them and make the game better as well as improving gameplay (the epically sneaky bug that broke connecting 5 has been burned with fire and shall never be spoken of again), flow and overall appearance. Everything we do is for a reason. We are a new company that is beginning to thrive and we have so many awesome ideas already, some that are being worked on more seriously than others. Make no mistake, with some of the best minds in the industry, rest assured we have a very large pool of game ideas to choose from :)

I cant stress enough the fact that we aren’t a bunch of developers who are creating products like Gobang Social because we want to work on simple connect 5 games and that alone, it was designed as a testing model, in which we can develop our tech and see how the game would work in the wild as well as how our custom server would handle turn based games. So far it is going well, especially since you can win an iPad in our competition we have going until the end of this month :)

Wee link for details:

Dont worry, you are gonna see some awesome and very ambitious games from us, Andrew has been hard at work prototyping some fantastic and innovative ideas whilst our expanding team has dived right into development. We have been able to form a strong dev team in the short time we have been operating, and took part in team building events, its important since you see your dev team members more than your loved ones! So whilst yes, we are going to keep on improving Gobang Social, regardless of its simplicity, the main reason for this is to offer you guys a service.

Maybe Gobang isn’t your kind of game, or your not a fan of turn based games, either way we want to know what you think regardless. Kwalee is a start up, we want to create some fantastic games for you guys and all the feedback you give us just makes it more likely we will create a range of products you will enjoy :)

‘Flip’ Is being developed and whilst yes, it does re-cycle a lot of assets, its important to remember that this is also important in development, to use what you can as a foundation before making it amazing. The art assets are being improved as per your previous feedback, what some of you said you would like to see and taking any criticism on board. Trust us, it will look awesome.

Keep playing Gobang Social and we are looking forward to delivering more awesome games to you guys soon :)

Oh, randomly, since Vegemite is dead, can I throw the Vegemite pot out the office window? Because I hate that disgustingly tar like stuff D:

It needs to be incinerated! But not inside the office because it will stink!
