Hey John,

Thanks for the idea regarding three colours. We’ve been aware of the slightly awkward feeling of transitioning colour from one side to the other between games for a long time. We wanted to keep the game consistant on both screens – such that when we have a screenshot sharing feature that both players could instantly identify with the game. However we also want there to be a clear way of distinguishing between players, especially if both choose the same colour at game sign-up!

We have a plan in mind, but its currently on the back burner for the time being while we focus on a few really big features that have been long requested (and actually long planned for us to get around to).

If you dont mind we’ll log your solution idea in our task management software, and up vote the task overral :) Thanks again for all the feedback and ideas, it really helps!

Someone else has mentioned this too, its not a bad suggestion – we’ll have a think about it. I think this is less of an issue for the casual player with only a few matches on the go. Those trying to win the iPad probably have fair few extra matches to bear in mind.

Sorry this isn’t especially constructive but I really dislike the “Play a game against [facebook friend]?” thing that pops up every so often. It feels like the game is trying to trick me into starting a game with someone. It can very easily be mistaken for an invite from that person.

Might just be me but it leaves a bit of a sour taste.

Thanks for the continued feedback John. We’re still tweaking a lot of the features of the game according to such feedback and the analytics we get back. So we have logged and will bring up your sentiments in the next meeting :)

Another suggestion:

With a lot of games on the go I often wish I could keep notes or place markers on the board to remind myself of what I’m up to.

One simple idea might be a pen tool which allows the player to scribble or draw directly on the board. This would have any number of uses which would be up to the player. They could mark planned moves or highlight where their opponent almost has an open 4 or 3 for example.

The data would just be saved locally and not transmitted.

Something like this might be good as a benefit for buying the paid version. Or maybe a cheap in app-purchase to buy the pen?

Ohhh, this is a pretty awesome idea. Its in a way, kind of similar to something we wanted to have in Gobang at some point but also to something I was discussing with Mark earlier this week. I think it would be a nice feature to have a ‘note mode’, so you can gobang someone latter on XD

Possibly daft idea: Gobang Fractal

For a much longer, deeper game against a particular opponent you play a ‘fractal’ game. Whenever you place a bomb it opens a complete new board (perhaps a smaller board than normal). The game is played as normal on the new board but the colour of the original bomb on the main board is dictated by the winner of the game on the mini-board.

So instead of just placing bombs you effectively battle over every piece.

Not sure how it would effect the balance of the main board.

Interesting, it would need to be tested and whatnot to see how effective it would be. Sounds like taking some elements of chess in a weird way.

Could potentially turn into a mahoosive game, in terms of length :)

Yeah I was trying to think of a way for two people to have a more involved, longer competition rather than just totting up wins or having a (say) 5 game tournament.

Not sure if this idea would work as it would lead to a different number of bombs of each colour on the main board. That might quickly unbalance the game.

Hello, can I point out that I have no idea what the goals of the game are? I like the Facebook connect feature and being pinged when a move has been made, but am just guessing what I’m doing with hope I’ll learn by losing (not ideal).
I also have several games running with the same person (John above! :) ) surely it shouldn’t allow more than one game per person…

I’m here for more info or if you need any extra feedback.

As a consumer I’d delete the app, as a games industry type I’m intrigued to see where it goes.

Hello Luke, good to hear from you :) Picking up a few things that you have said:

Like John said, its to get 5 in a row before your opponent. In the intro, it demonstrates this and also says ’5 in a row’, and Gobang is based on Gomuku, the connect 5 game. Do you feel the game needs more re-enforcement aka tutorial/more of a visual aid?

We allow our users to play multiple games with the same person yes, can you specify whether you have clicked the random player button and received John as an opponent more often than not or whether it was an invite sent by him you accepted?

As a consumer I’d delete the app, as a games industry type I’m intrigued to see where it goes.

Obviously, we love to hear from industry and consumer types alike and want to do everything in our power to keep you playing Gobang, so any suggestions/feedback is welcome. Deleting app’s make artists cry, so we would like to rectify this anyway possible :)

John – As per your request to stats/more info on wins etc, currently speaking to David about that one. I like the way they do this in ‘Draw Something’ with their pop down menu full of shiny pie charts etc, is this along the lines of what you are meaning?

Well I’d like to know how many games I’ve played overall. How many I’ve won. How many blue/red games. How many people I’ve played.

Suggestion: Everyone you play against gets added to an accessible list so you can challenge them again. The current score (you vs. them) is listed next to each name on the list.

Suggestion: Make the lists of games on the main screen collapsible. Currently it takes ages to scroll through them.

Possible bug: When you get a notification that says (say) “It’s your turn in the game with Walt D” and select it the game boots up and you are presented with a screen which says “It’s Walt D’s turn”. After a few secs it sorts itself out.

Possible bug: If you leave the game running on the main page, occasionally when a turn arrives it opens it automatically.

Possible bug: When you complete a turn and return to the main page the list hasn’t yet updated to remove that turn so you can end up tapping on the same turn again but actually opening a different one. A bit confusing at times.

Possible bug: After a “server busy” alert the game sometimes won’t ever recover connectivity until you reboot the app. This still happens in the latest version (I know the messages have changed).

Suggestion: Make the app universal with proper assets for iPad. I only tried it on the iPad yesterday and was surprised how rough it looks. It seemed like different elements were rendered in different resolutions. The bombs seemed high res while other elements very chunky (as expected in the zoomed in mode).

With the ipad competition I was surprised the game isn’t universal.
