If you have a good idea as to how we could make Gobang Social even better leave a comment here as we will be updating the game regularly, so we’d be really appreciative of any ideas. Thanks!!

After chatting to one player, I got a bit of really good feedback from him and it was concerning lost games. They seem to end and just fall into your Ended games, the user was expressing frustration at this and that it would be better if you see your games end when you lose. I agree, so any more feedback like this, or improvements you would like us to take a look at (no matter how crazy), feel free to let us know :)

It’s only then list of stuff to do, I think they’re describing particularly when the other player deletes the game, then they win but they don’t see it happen.

We’re working on improving that in a future release.

Hello, it was me talking about the losing thing.

When you lose, the game drops instantly into the completed list and the only notification you get is when (if) the winner challenges you to a rematch.

It would be better if the game stayed in the ‘Your Turn’ until you’ve viewed it and seen your opponent win. Also the rematch request should be suppressed somehow until that point.

Currently you never see yourself lose (or even know you’ve lost) unless you go into the completed games list and view the final turn.
——-
Another little idea: The chat function is a bit hidden away. What if your chat message appeared as a speech bubble in game coming from the last bomb you place? It would be funnier and a lot more noticeable. Tapping the speech bubble could take you to the normal chat page.

This would also allow the player to make funny/sarcastic comments about the move they are making
————-
Would it possible to have a few options when challenging a random player?
Someone I’ve never played before
Someone I’ve never beaten
Someone who’s played in the last hour/day (likely to respond)
—————–
I’d like to challenge facebook friends but I don’t want to spam their facebook page. Is there a more discrete way to do this? I understand you want to spread the word but, well, I’m not going to spam peoples pages. Maybe restrict that kind of stuff to “John beat Freddy at Gobang Social” so it’s just good news thats getting posted and on MY page.

Is it possible to target facebook friends who have the game installed?

Not sure if this is a bug but sometimes when I’m taking a turn a completely different turn slides on. Very confusing.

Thanks for getting in touch John!

John,

Those are really good suggestions, we’re working on the “showing you when you lose” thing but strangely it’s a bit harder than I’d first imagined.

I like being able to choose about random player, we’re working on something that I think you’ll like in a couple of updates.

And I agree with “John beat Freddy at Gobang Social” type posts would be a good option.

We’ll log that one about “Not sure if this is a bug but sometimes when I’m taking a turn a completely different turn slides on. Very confusing.”, I’ve seen that one too.

Thank-you for your comments they’re really helpful! :)

You’re right about another game sliding onto the screen. That’s a bug, I’ll get that resolved now. Thanks for the constructive feedback :-)

Getting a lot of crashes with the new version. Might be a memory issue as I do have several thousand* games on the go.

Playing on a 4s.

*haven\’t counted but I\’ve got a lot.

Thanks again John.

There’s a consistent crash with this release, if you open the app in response to a push notification it dumps you straight out to the homescreen. This has been fixed ready for the 1.5 submission. The memory usage isn’t out of the ordinary and we release any resources we can in response to a system warning, however there can still be issues – iOS is pretty impatient! Not sure how many games you have, but Alexei had several hundred on the go without issue this week. Many thanks for your patience with the crashes!

I liked your suggestion for the chat notification bubble, that’s not a bad idea :-)

That’s probably the crash I’ve found then. As an iOS developer myself I love being able to put out updates. It means a minor bug isn’t earth shattering and the update actually encourages people to try the game again.

We’ve implemented a variation of speech bubble ourselves in a couple of games – both in this turn-based format; Naked War and an unreleased football title which is on the backburner at the moment. Works well and really encourages banter.

Yeah, I thought this was a really nice suggestion too, mocked it up earlier today to see how it would look :)

1.5 should be released ASAP which should sort any probs you keep getting, and seconding James, thanks for the patience :3

Quick suggestion/request: Can I always be the same colour (on my screen). It’s quite confusing when you have a lot of games on the go and you’re sometimes blue sometimes red.

There’s no reason why you can’t always be the same colour locally.

I actually have to agree with John on that. I also get confused when using the chat, as the bomb colour is sometimes different to the bomb colour I’m playing with in the game.

A little thing we did in Naked War (PC turn-based game) was make everyone choose either red or blue when they signed up. Any game played against someone of the other colour was a ‘competitive game’ and the wins for red vs blue were totted up on the website.

A game played against someone of the same colour was a ‘friendly game’. Your opponent was displayed on your screen in a third colour (green).
